Is it really possible to get filters as narrow as 5 mm for all possible
filter choices?

NIC-FPS Response:

Barr Assoc. has quoted using 5 mm thick substrates, for the 0.3%
bandpass filters. They do not include the coating thickness in their
quotes.

The filter wheels will be sized to accomodate thicker filters (up to 10
mm thick?)

The filter wheel closest to the pupil can accomodate 60 mm diameter 
filters by using an insert.
