Topic/Presenter: Thermal-Vacuum / Hearty Question/Comment: 1) Flexure of I-beam attachment of main structure and differential rotator angles? 2) Materials for construction? Submitted by: Bruce Gillespie NIC-FPS Response: 1) Design of attachment configuration is currently (early July) underway. The challenge is to not give up too much structural strength, while allowing adjustability for aligning the bench in a perpendicular position. When design is finalized (before CDR), structural analysis will yield requested flexure numbers. Not currently concerned that an acceptable design will be demonstrated. 2) Construction materials are 6061 T6, heat-treated Al for internal (cold) components such as optical bench, beams, cold standoff, LN2 tank, filter wheels, optical mounts. Shell, flange, mounting plate, etc. are to be 5052 Al which is stronger and easier to roll/weld. The thermal standoff material will be G10 or G10-CR, depending on availability/cost. Mylar (super insulation) blankets will be used for near 100% coverage of thermal boundaries. Status: Further details at Critical Design Review.
