Topic/Presenter: Thermal-Vacuum / Hearty Question/Comment: Make flanges for the warm section rectangular? Submitted by: Bruce Gillespie NIC-FPS Response: The current design for round flanges and V-groves on the cart has many advantages for testing and maintenance of the dewar. Our experience with this configuration on rocket payloads (typically 1.5-2? diameter, 12 ? long?twice the size of this instrument) indicate the V-grove approach is stable and easy to live with. Current plans are to have V-grove holders at each end of the front assembly, about an inch or so inside of the flanges, with a restraint strap between them. A third, retractable V-grove holder would be positioned at the far end of the cart to support the removable shell section when installed. The end bell would be completely cantilevered off the end of the cart for ease of removal. I believe that this approach will provide a simple and extremely reliable method of supporting the instrument during both operating and maintenance cycles. Status: Closed.
